In the quiet, dusty corners of a town called Nameless, a story is beginning to stir.
Most people in the village see Artemis as just a "normal, average girl"—a twelve-year-old with short brown hair and bangs that just skim her bright green eyes. She lives in a cramped pantry under the stairs of a sour old woman she calls "Auntie," a place she was left years ago by a mysterious caravan.
A World of Mysteries
Artemis carries a fierce, burning curiosity. Under the flicker of a dying candle, she wonders about the parents who left her behind. Did they think so badly of her? Or was there a reason she was set on this path? She can feel it in her gut—there is something else out there.
That "something" has recently taken the shape of a mysterious, humming Pink Line of light that stretches from the mountain peaks right down to the chimney of a very strange cottage.

She isn't alone in her wandering. Meet Ambros, a village boy who is actually only three months older than her, though he constantly tries to act as if he is three years her senior. Whether they are fishing along the No Name River or pretending to be kings and thieves hiding from passing tinkers, Ambros is her constant companion—even when his overconfidence gets them into trouble.
